Kongens Nytorv is a large historic square in central Copenhagen laid out in the late seventeenth century as a grand centrepiece for the growing city. An equestrian statue of the king who created it stands at its centre, encircled by distinguished buildings including a theatre, a former royal residence and elegant townhouses. The square connects to the colourful old harbour on one side and the main shopping street on another. In winter an ice rink appears at its heart, continuing its long role as a focal point of city life.
