A 17th-century waterfront canal district in central Copenhagen lined with brightly coloured townhouses, wooden sailing vessels, and pavement cafes. The canal was dug in 1670–73 to connect the sea to the city centre, and the buildings along its north quay retain their original merchant-house facades in shades of red, yellow, and blue. The reflection of the coloured facades in the still canal water at dawn is among the most photographed scenes in Scandinavia.
