The legislative complex in central Jakarta is instantly recognised by the great green curved shell of its main assembly hall, resembling a pair of wings meeting at the ridge. Designed in the 1960s and completed in the 1980s, it houses the People's Consultative Assembly and the House of Representatives, the core organs of the national legislature. The sweeping roof became a national symbol during the reform-era demonstrations of 1998. The grounds include office towers, plazas and reflecting pools set back from the avenues.
