The Textile Museum of Jakarta is devoted to the woven and dyed fabrics of the Indonesian archipelago, above all batik and ikat, and occupies a colonial villa set in a walled garden. Its collections include thousands of pieces gathered from Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi and the eastern islands, showing regional patterns, natural dyes and ceremonial cloths. A batik workshop lets visitors try the wax-resist technique for themselves, and a dye garden grows the plants traditionally used to colour fabric.
