This bronze monument at the centre of the Hotel Indonesia roundabout depicts a young man and woman raising their arms in welcome, a gesture that gives it the name meaning Welcome Monument. Commissioned by President Sukarno for the 1962 Asian Games, it symbolised Indonesia's opening to the world. The figures stand atop a tall column rising from a fountain that now animates one of Jakarta's busiest traffic circles. Illuminated at night and framed by high-rise towers, it has become an informal emblem of the modern city.

Where next?

The world is wide open.
