This tall commemorative column, known as the Liberty Memorial, stands near Copenhagen's central station. Erected in the late eighteenth century, it celebrates the abolition of adscription, a form of serfdom that had bound Danish peasants to the land. The obelisk is surrounded by allegorical figures representing loyalty, industry, and civic virtue, honouring the agrarian reforms that freed the rural population. It is among the earliest public monuments dedicated to liberating ordinary people.
