The Anglican cathedral overlooking the Octagon is notable for having the only stone-vaulted Gothic nave of any cathedral in the country, its ribbed ceiling rising above a lofty interior. Built of local stone in the early twentieth century, it was later extended with a contrasting modern chancel. The elevated position and flight of steps up to its entrance make it a prominent presence on the central square. It hosts regular worship, concerts and civic services.
