Dunedin Public Art Gallery

One of the oldest art galleries in the country, this institution on the Octagon holds a collection ranging from European old masters to New Zealand painting and contemporary works. Founded in the late nineteenth century, it occupies a modern space behind a heritage facade in the central city. Changing exhibitions supplement the permanent holdings, and admission to the collection is free. Its European works, unusual for a city of Dunedin's size, reflect the wealth of the gold-rush era.
