Baldwin Street

This short residential street in a Dunedin suburb is famed for being among the steepest streets in the world, with a gradient so severe that its upper section is surfaced in concrete rather than asphalt. Curious visitors come to walk or run up the sharp incline, and it has hosted charity events rolling sweets down its slope. The street's unusual steepness resulted from a grid plan laid out without regard to the terrain. It has become one of the city's best-known novelty attractions.
