The Botanical Gardens of Georgetown are a large landscaped park in the capital, laid out in the nineteenth century with winding creeks, ponds, palm avenues and Victorian-era bridges. The grounds host a wide range of tropical plants and shelter native wildlife, including the manatees that live in the lily-covered ponds and flocks of colourful birds. A small zoo and monuments occupy parts of the site. Long a place of recreation and courtship for city residents, the gardens combine botanical interest with the atmosphere of a period park.
