The Georgetown Lighthouse marks the mouth of the Demerara River, guiding ships along the muddy Atlantic coast toward the capital's harbour. Painted in bold red and white bands, the brick tower dates from the nineteenth century, replacing an earlier Dutch-era structure. It stands near the seawall in the northern part of the city, a reminder of Georgetown's role as a colonial trading port. Its striped form is a recognisable coastal landmark, and the surrounding area offers views over the shipping channel and shoreline.
