The Alexandra Bridge is a steel truss bridge spanning the Ottawa River between Ottawa and Gatineau, opened in 1900 as a combined rail and road crossing. Its long cantilever span, once among the largest in the world, links the parliamentary precinct with the national history museum on the Quebec shore. A pedestrian walkway offers open views back toward Parliament Hill and the river's rapids below. A landmark of early Canadian engineering, the aging structure has long been the subject of plans for eventual replacement.
