Founded in 1921 in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, the Phillips is often called America's first museum of modern art. It grew from the private home and collection of Duncan Phillips, and the intimate domestic rooms remain part of the experience. Its best-known work is Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party, joined by pieces by Bonnard, Klee, Rothko, and other modern masters. The museum stages chamber concerts, and a dedicated Rothko Room offers a meditative space designed to display four of the artist's paintings together.
