This Federal-style mansion and garden in Georgetown was completed in 1816 for Thomas Peter and his wife Martha Custis Peter, a granddaughter of Martha Washington. Designed by Capitol architect William Thornton, it features a distinctive domed portico and remained in the same family for six generations. The house preserves an exceptional collection of objects from Mount Vernon, making it a rare window onto the Washington family. Its terraced gardens, spanning more than five acres, include boxwood parterres, mature trees, and formal flower beds.
