Built in 1765, this modest fieldstone dwelling in the Georgetown neighborhood is widely regarded as the oldest surviving building on its original foundation in the city. It survived the growth of the capital partly through a legend, later disproved, that George Washington had used it, and it is now preserved by the National Park Service. The interior is furnished to reflect ordinary artisans and tradespeople of the colonial era. A quiet garden behind the house offers a retreat off M Street.
