Georgetown is the oldest neighbourhood in Washington, D.C., a port settlement on the Potomac River that predates the founding of the capital and was later absorbed into it. Its grid of brick rowhouses, cobbled streets and Federal-era buildings climbs from the waterfront toward the university that shares its name. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, with its towpath and old lock structures, runs through the district. Visitors stroll the restored waterfront park and shop-lined main streets.
