The Cathedral of St Matthew the Apostle is the seat of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Washington, a Romanesque and Renaissance-influenced church completed in 1913 a short walk from the White House. Its red brick exterior gives way to an opulent interior of coloured marble, mosaics and a great dome. The cathedral is best remembered as the site of the funeral Mass of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, marked by a stone inscription in the floor before the altar.
