This seven-acre public square sits directly north of the White House and once formed part of the executive grounds before being set aside as a park in the early nineteenth century. At its center stands an equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson, ringed by monuments to foreign officers of the American Revolution. Framed by historic townhouses, St. John's Church and Decatur House, the square has long served as a gathering point for demonstrations and inaugural crowds. Visitors stroll shaded paths with a view across Pennsylvania Avenue.
