This Greek Revival landmark immediately east of the White House is the headquarters of the U.S. Department of the Treasury and one of the oldest departmental buildings in the capital. Built in stages from the 1830s to the 1860s, it features a long colonnade of granite columns that appears on the reverse of the ten-dollar bill. Inside are a marble-clad two-story cash room and a statue of Alexander Hamilton. Its placement famously interrupts the sightline from the White House to the Capitol.
