The Marinid Tombs are the ruined mausoleums of the Marinid dynasty, standing on a hillside above the northern walls of the Fes medina. Built in the fourteenth century to hold the graves of sultans and their families, the tombs are now weathered shells of pale stone, their domes and walls largely collapsed. Despite their decay they remain a favourite viewpoint, drawing visitors at sunset when the whole medina spreads out below in shades of ochre, punctuated by the green minaret of the Qarawiyyin.
