The al-Attarine Madrasa is a Marinid religious college built in the 1320s in the heart of the Fes el-Bali medina, beside the spice and perfume market that gives it its name. Small in scale but exceptionally refined, it is arranged around a marble courtyard with a central fountain, its walls covered in carved stucco, cedar latticework and dense zellij rising to a green-tiled roof. Once housing students of the nearby Qarawiyyin, it is regarded as one of the finest examples of Marinid architecture in the city.
