Donkeys still out-compete cars in Fez el-Bali, a 9th-century medina whose labyrinth has never been redrawn. The city peaked under the Marinid dynasty in the 13th and 14th centuries, when it displaced Marrakesh as capital and gained the madrasas, fondouks, mosques and fountains that define it. Politics moved to Rabat in 1912, but Morocco's spiritual heart never left. UNESCO inscribed the Medina of Fez in 1981.
