The Mosque of the Andalusians is one of the oldest and largest mosques in Fes, founded in the ninth century in the Andalusian quarter said to have been settled by refugees from Córdoba. Rebuilt and expanded under successive dynasties, it is entered through a monumental north gate with a wide carved-wood canopy and ornate arch that ranks among the finest in the city. A tall square minaret rises above the rooftops. Long a centre of community life on the east bank, it anchors a quarter that grew in parallel with the Qarawiyyin district.
