The Zaouia of Moulay Idris II is a shrine and mausoleum at the heart of the Fes medina, holding the tomb of the ruler credited with founding the city in the early ninth century. Rebuilt in its present form in the eighteenth century, it is one of the most venerated religious sites in Morocco and a focus of pilgrimage. Its green-tiled roof, carved wooden screens and decorated entrance stand at the centre of lanes filled with candle sellers and craft stalls. Its inner sanctuary is reserved for Muslims.
