The first underground railway built in Central Asia, the Tashkent Metro is famous less for its trains than for its lavishly decorated stations, each designed on a distinct theme. Marble columns, carved ganch, glazed ceramics, chandeliers and mosaics honour figures such as the poet Alisher Navoi and the country's cosmonautic era, turning the network into an accessible gallery of Soviet and Uzbek design. Built partly to withstand earthquakes, the system long forbade photography, which has only recently been permitted.
