A green public square at the heart of Tashkent, ringed by tree-lined avenues and framed by grand buildings from different eras of the city's history. At its centre stands an equestrian statue of Amir Timur that replaced earlier monuments over the square's changing history. Shaded benches, fountains and mature plane trees make it a favoured meeting place and a cool refuge in summer. The square links several of the capital's most important cultural and administrative landmarks.
