A historic commercial lane running west from the old front-gate street in the southern city, once among the busiest markets of the capital. Its name refers to a wooden barrier that used to close the alley at night. Restored shopfronts house some of the city's oldest surviving businesses, including celebrated pharmacies, silk shops, tea merchants, and a pickle store, several dating back centuries. Narrow side alleys branch into a dense old-city fabric of former theaters and inns, a living record of traditional commerce.
