The southernmost and largest gate of the former imperial palace, this U-shaped structure served as the formal entrance where emperors reviewed troops and received prisoners of war. Its five arched passages beneath a broad terrace crowned by pavilions gave the design its nickname, the Five Phoenix Towers. Only the sovereign could pass through the central arch in normal times. Today it houses rotating exhibition galleries and marks the start of most visitor routes through the palace.
