Occupying the eastern Palace of Tranquil Longevity within the former imperial compound, this ticketed section gathers the court's finest jade, gold, cloisonné, and jeweled ceremonial objects. The buildings were built as a retirement palace for an eighteenth-century emperor and enclose an ornate opera stage and a garden of rockeries. Highlights include a nine-dragon spirit wall of glazed tiles and a giant jade mountain carved from a single boulder. The gallery rewards those who venture beyond the crowded central axis.
