The immense state building along the western edge of the capital's central square, used for legislative sessions, national congresses, and formal receptions. Built around 1959, its colonnaded facade fronts a banqueting hall seating thousands and an auditorium beneath a domed ceiling of concentric lights. Individual reception rooms are themed after China's provinces and regions. When not in session it opens to visitors, who tour the grand corridors and assembly chamber. Its scale defines the square's monumental architecture.
