Metelkova

This former Austro-Hungarian military barracks in Ljubljana became an autonomous cultural centre after activists occupied the site in the 1990s. Its buildings and courtyards are covered in dense murals, mosaics, and sculpture, turning the compound into a constantly evolving canvas of street art. By night it hosts clubs, galleries, and live music, giving the city a distinctive alternative and countercultural quarter. Adjacent stand major state museums, making the block an unexpected meeting of official heritage and grassroots creativity.
