Stretching along the riverbank between the cathedral and the Triple Bridge, Ljubljana's central market was designed by the architect Jože Plečnik as a colonnaded promenade. Open-air stalls sell seasonal produce, flowers, and herbs, while a covered arcade and a lower riverside gallery house butchers, bakers, and a fish market. A distinctive milk-dispensing machine and small eateries add to the everyday bustle. The graceful arcade, its columns framing views of the water, is as much an architectural set piece as a working marketplace.
