Dedicated to Saint Nicholas, this Baroque cathedral near the central market is distinguished by its green dome and twin towers. Built in the early eighteenth century on the site of earlier churches, its interior glows with frescoes, gilded altars, and illusionistic ceiling paintings by Italian artists. Two ornate bronze doors, added for a papal visit in the twentieth century, depict Slovenian church history and the bishops of Ljubljana in bold relief. The building anchors the ecclesiastical quarter beside the market colonnade.
