Known as Number One London for its position at the western entrance to the city, Apsley House at Hyde Park Corner was the residence of the first Duke of Wellington. Behind its Bath stone facade lie state rooms hung with Old Master paintings acquired after the Napoleonic Wars, including works by Velázquez and Goya. The Waterloo Gallery hosted annual banquets marking the 1815 victory, and a colossal nude statue of Napoleon stands in the stairwell. The Wellington family still occupies part of the house.
