Lancaster House is a grand nineteenth-century mansion near St James's Palace, used by the British government for official receptions and international conferences. Built for the Duke of York and later home to the Sutherland family, its opulent interiors were said to rival those of Buckingham Palace itself. The state acquired it in the twentieth century, and its gilded halls have hosted major diplomatic gatherings and film shoots. It occasionally welcomes visitors during heritage events revealing its lavish reception rooms.
