Chapter I · Francisco Morazán Department · 10 places

Francisco Morazán Department

A cloud-forest park within an hour of Tegucigalpa, established on former mining land and crossed by well-marked trails past old tunnels and waterfalls. It supplies much of the capital's water and offers the easiest quetzal habitat to reach in Honduras.

Chapter II · Cortés Department · 8 places

Cortés Department

A rugged cloud-forest park in the Merendón mountains above San Pedro Sula, known among biologists for its exceptional amphibian diversity and long-running research expeditions. Rough access roads keep visitor numbers tiny and the trails genuinely wild.

Chapter III · Atlántida Department · 5 places

Atlántida Department

Pico Bonito National Park encompasses a steep mountain massif rising abruptly from the Caribbean lowlands near La Ceiba, harbouring one of the most intact cloud forest ecosystems in Honduras. The park's rivers descend in spectacular cascades through primary forest sheltering resplendent quetzals, jaguars, and white-collared swifts that nest behind certain waterfalls. River-based entry points allow day hikes along rushing streams with pools suitable for swimming.

Chapter IV · Bay Islands Department · 5 places

Bay Islands Department

Roatán is the largest of Honduras's Bay Islands, positioned on the outer edge of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System—the second longest barrier reef in the world. Its western coast around West End and West Bay Beach hosts dive operations offering access to wall dives, tunnels, and shallow coral gardens within minutes of shore. The island's interior ridge is covered with secondary tropical forest traversed by zip-line canopy tours and hiking trails.
