Pico Bonito National Park encompasses a steep mountain massif rising abruptly from the Caribbean lowlands near La Ceiba, harbouring one of the most intact cloud forest ecosystems in Honduras. The park's rivers descend in spectacular cascades through primary forest sheltering resplendent quetzals, jaguars, and white-collared swifts that nest behind certain waterfalls. River-based entry points allow day hikes along rushing streams with pools suitable for swimming.

The island's interior ridge is covered with secondary tropical forest traversed by zip-line canopy tours and hiking trails.
