The basin of the Río Plátano holds one of Central America's last great sweeps of tropical rainforest, falling from mountain ridges to Honduras's Caribbean coast. The reserve teems with plants and wildlife, and more than 2,000 indigenous people maintain their traditional way of life within it. UNESCO inscribed the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve as a Natural World Heritage Site in 1982.
