Copán ranks among the defining cities of the Maya world. First reported by Diego García de Palacio in 1570 yet left unexcavated until the 19th century, its ruined citadel and broad public squares chart three main stages of growth before the city was abandoned early in the 10th century. The site in western Honduras was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1980.
