Its medina of narrow lanes, carved doorways and a hilltop citadel is among the best preserved in the archipelago. A working port keeps the waterfront lively with inter-island dhows.

Grande Comore

The capital of the Comoros, pressed between the slopes of Mount Karthala and a harbour where dhows still land the day's catch. The old Arab quarter's coral-stone alleys wind past carved doors to the Friday Mosque overlooking the water. Ylang-ylang, vanilla and cloves from the surrounding hills scent its markets.
