The largest island of the Comoros, built from the lava flows of Mount Karthala and edged with black basalt shores and white-sand pockets like Chomoni and Bouni. Its plantation villages produce much of the world's ylang-ylang oil. Travel here remains genuinely off the tourist trail, with simple guesthouses and few crowds.
