An active shield volcano dominating Grande Comore, with one of the largest summit calderas of any volcano on Earth. The two-day trek from villages above Moroni climbs through rainforest and heath to a stark lunar crater rim at 2,361 metres. Endemic birds, including the Karthala scops owl, live on its forested flanks.
