Mumbai's busiest railway station is also one of its greatest buildings. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the work of the Briton F. W. Stevens and constructed over ten years from 1878, marries High Victorian Gothic modelled on late medieval Italy with the dome, turrets and layout of Indian palace tradition — British architects and Indian craftsmen together forging a style unique to Bombay. The terminus was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2004.
