This ornate stone fountain stands at the busy junction of Hutatma Chowk in the heart of the Fort business district. Carved in Portland stone during the 1860s, it depicts the Roman goddess Flora atop a tiered basin surrounded by mythological figures. Long a symbol of colonial-era Bombay, the fountain now shares its square with a memorial to those killed in the movement for a separate Maharashtra state. Office workers and street vendors throng the roundabout, and its silhouette appears in countless images of the city's commercial core.
