A short boat ride from Mumbai, the island once known as the City of Caves preserves rock-cut art devoted to the cult of Shiva. In the great main cave, colossal high reliefs — above all the celebrated triple-headed Shiva — represent Indian sculpture at its most sublime. The Elephanta Caves were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.
