Ulaanbaatar is the capital and largest city of Mongolia, home to roughly half the country's population and the primary entry point for travellers. The city spans a broad valley of the Tuul River at 1350 metres elevation and combines Soviet-era apartment blocks, new glass towers, and a sprawling ger district on surrounding hills. Sukhbaatar Square — recently renamed Chinggis Khaan Square — is framed by government buildings and a prominent equestrian statue of Genghis Khan, while the Gandantegchinlen Monastery remains an active Buddhist centre.
