The vast ceremonial heart of Ulaanbaatar was named for the revolutionary Damdin Sükhbaatar, whose bronze equestrian statue marks where independence was declared in 1921. It is framed by the colonnaded Government Palace, whose façade shelters a monumental seated statue of Genghis Khan flanked by his generals. Ringed by ministries, the opera house and modern towers, the plaza hosts state parades and the Naadam opening. Visitors come to photograph the flagpoles, honour guards and sweeping civic architecture.
