The country's principal history museum traces the Mongolian story from prehistoric petroglyphs and Bronze Age deer stones through the empire of Genghis Khan to the socialist century and independence. Galleries display embroidered costumes and headdresses from dozens of ethnic groups, Xiongnu artefacts, Buddhist ritual objects and the seals and armour of the khans. A recreated trade caravan and interactive maps chart the empire's reach across Eurasia.
