Fortress of Suomenlinna

Sweden spread the fortress of Suomenlinna across a cluster of islands guarding the approach to Helsinki's harbour in the later 18th century, building one of the era's most ambitious works of coastal defence. Its bastions, tunnels and barracks — later held by Russia and finally Finland — make it a compelling record of European military engineering. UNESCO inscribed the sea fortress as a World Heritage Site in 1991.
