This statue stands at the centre of Senate Square in Helsinki, honouring the Russian tsar Alexander II, who granted Finland increased autonomy during his reign. Unveiled in 1894, it depicts the emperor in ceremonial dress atop a tall granite pedestal, surrounded by allegorical figures representing law, peace, light, and labour. Finns preserved the monument even after independence. Framed by the neoclassical cathedral and government palace, it forms the focal point of the square.
