Kauppatori, the Market Square, is the open-air marketplace on Helsinki's south harbour, where stalls sell produce, fish, crafts and reindeer sausage beside the moored boats. The Havis Amanda fountain, a bronze mermaid rising from the sea, stands on its edge and is crowned each May Day. The presidential palace, city hall and the terminal for archipelago ferries surround the square. A short walk leads to the old market hall, and the domed cathedral rises on the slope just above the harbour front.
